Now, lets talk about what goes on during these times. Between 5-7am is prime time for Large Intestine Meridian. During this time your Large Intestines are being packed with bile for secretion at about 7 am. This is said to be the best time for a bowel movement.

Between the hours of 7-9 am your Stomach Meridian is most active, this is the best time to eat breakfast. This is why its said its best to eat a full breakfast and that its the most important meal of the day.

Between the hours of 9-11 am your Spleen Meridian is most active. In Chinese Medicine the Spleen is primary for digestion. Food is then transformed into Qi and Blood. Between these hours are the best times for thinking and working.

Between the hours of 11 am- 1pm your Heart Meridian is most active. This is not the time to put additional stress on yourself. Most heart attacks are said to happen late morning. The Heart Meridian has aversion to heat, best time to stay out of the heat and avoid heat inducing runs. This window is best for socializing and eating.

Between the hours of 1-3pm your Small Intestine Meridian is most active. This is prime time for digestion, and most times prime times for indigestion and bloating.  It is said that this is the best time for sorting and organizing.

Between the hours of 3-5pm your Bladder Meridian is most active. Your bladder strengthens with salty foods (and I don't mean salty chips either) A cup of miso soup would be a great idea at this time.

Between the hours of 5-7pm your Kidney Meridian is most active. Your Kidney Meridian is closely linked to the emotion of fear. Also associated with the Kidney is fear and willpower. Like the Bladder, the Kidney also thrives on salty foods.

Between the hours of 7-9pm your Pericardium Meridian is most active.

This is prime time for you to be relaxing and unwinding. Since the digestive system is least active at night, eating after 7 pm should be avoided.

Between the hours of 9-11pm your Triple Warmer Meridian is most active. This is the best time for you to be going to sleep.

Between the hours of 11pm-1 am your Gall Bladder Meridian is most active. By this time you should be in a deep sleep. The Gall Bladder is closely linked to courage and wise judgement, when this Meridian is imbalanced a person will find it harder to make decisions (rash decision making or indecisive).

Between the hours of 1-3am your Liver Meridian is most active. This is a prime time for your Liver which is why its best not to consume alcohol during this time. The liver harbors anger and resentment. This is also the best time to be asleep because the liver is detoxifying not only our body but our emotions as well.

Between the hours of 3-5am your Lung Meridian is most active. By now you should be breathing lightly preparing to wake. During this time your lung is preparing you for the day ahead. Its responsible for your voice and energy for the day ahead.

Now that you have read this, do you see any patterns that effect you?

Chinese meridian clock

Have you ever wondered why you may be waking up at the exact same time at night? (besides of course waking up to your child smacking you in the face! haha) I say that because I often experience that! While that will have nothing to do with your sleep pattern, there may just be a reason your little one is getting up at the same time every night.

According to Chinese Medicine, each meridian is most active during the 2 hour increments, as you see to the left. If you are waking up consistently at 3:30 am every morning it does not necessarily mean you have a sleep problem. You could have a disharmony in your Lung Meridian, and it could be associated with some sort of grief you are experiencing in your life. But, don't get too worried yet. It doesn't necessarily mean there is something wrong with your Lungs. It's just the way they're named in English.

If you have not heard about the Meridians and would like to learn more be sure to check out the section on Meridians.

So, lets reflect here for a minute. If your waking up at 1:30 am every morning you have to look at what could I be angry or frustrated with? It could also mean you have something in your life that is toxic that you need to get rid of. Have you noticed you get headaches at a certain time, or feel grumpy or irritable at the same times? This could be an answer to look further into.
